In addition to recycling paper and plastic, students learned
how to recycle food and garden waste this year.
Every week, classrooms either collected fruit and vegetable scraps from school
or dry leaves and clippings from around the playground. The waste material was placed inside the
class’ compost bucket. Then at the end of the week, these buckets were emptied
into the school’s compost bin, mixed, and lightly watered.
Students taught each other how to “cook” compost in a series of videos that were aired on the morning news show. In the videos, students explained what compost is, what “green” and “brown” ingredients to add, as well as why we use compost.
